Lightly used 36-spoke 700c (ertro BSD 622mm) rear wheel, in very good condition. Although a tire is shown, no tire, tube, or freewheel is included. OLND spacing is set at about 131.5mm (nominally, 130) for the most minimal wheel dish when used with a 7-speed freewheel. Can expertly alter the OLND & FW spacing to suit & if necessary swap out axle and skewer shaft with shorter genuine Campagnolo parts, if requested. It could for example, be changed to a 120 ~ 125mm, for a 5-speed, and be done without having to weaken the wheel by increasing its dish.
The only flaws of note are:
1.) most of the outer spokes on the right side (on their thicker, butted section near the hub) have visible chain-scrapes. They are invisible without close inspection, and far too minor to threaten integrity or impair function. The hub flange is true and undamaged.
2.) A very small (about 5mm x 6mm) section of the rim’s unique coating was removed on one side at the joint (see photo) to make the rim width more perfectly uniform.
3.) Some light corrosion or discoloration on the eyelets and nipples; a small amount of dirt and grime on spokes, hub, and rim.
4.) One of the crucial original rim decals or portions thereof (that have been light green in color) have been removed.
The Campagnolo Delta Strada XL rim is a unique, very rare, excellent, and very special lightweight clincher rim, ahead of its time. 22mm wide, only about 420g, and with double-eyelet spoke-hole reinforcements. Compared to riding more common deeper-section rims, it feels noticeably less harsh and more plush and absorbing of shock and vibration. The extra 2mm of width gives greater air volume to any tire, and provides very good lateral strength despite its very light weight. The finish is unique, too: it is not in reality ‘chromium’ but relatively a very hard, abrasion-resistant, anodized coating in an odd dull silver (or, shiny gray) color. The rim is exceptionally round and true, with no dents, dings, or flat spots. Very suitable for tires from 23 to 32mm in width.
Hub and QR skewer are in excellent condition. Perfectly adjusted, extremely smooth bearings. The ‘Hi-Lo’ was first made for the German national Olympic team in 1972; this hub was made about a decade later. Threading for freewheel is standard, BSC English, 24 t.p.i.
36 stainless steel spokes are double-butted Wheelsmith brand (made by Asahi, Japan) and the nipples are forged light-alloy, made in Switzerland by DT/Edco, laced in the dual-pattern that IMO best compliments the Hi-Lo design, both aesthetically and functionally, causing the right-left spoke tension to be more uniform and equal. All nipples turn freely and none are damaged.
Wheel was hand-built by yours actually about 1990, maybe a year or two after the rim was made. Retired and carefully stored since the early 90’s.
